How to Be a Grab Car Driver in Singapore

Grab is proof that custom-tailored and localized service is a better option than any global setup. With additional fintech solutions and food delivery services, Grab leads in downloads and users, despite a new contender, GoJek.

With the popularity of their services, it comes to no surprise that many drivers are interested in driving for Grab. But, how do you become a Grab car driver?

Grab Car Driver Requirements

The basic requirements to be a Grab Driver are pretty strict and there’s not much wiggle room around them.

The rules were that drivers must be at least 21 years old with at least 2 years of driving experience. And of course, you need to be a Singaporean or Permanent Resident (PR) with a valid Class 3 driving license. For a PR, it’s stated that you must be employed by a limousine company.

However, as of 2021, new private hire drivers must be Singaporeans that are at least 30 years of age. Otherwise, you won’t be able to get the essential Private Hire Car Driver’s Vocational License (PDVL) to drive for private hire services like Grab. Read more about the new requirements here.

Although it doesn’t sound like much, getting your PDVL is a lot tougher than you think. It’s so difficult that even seasoned drivers with over 20 years experience have failed the test.

Land Transport Authority (LTA) introduced the PDVL in 2017 to ensure that every driver is properly licensed and qualified to drive for private hire services. The license is similar to the Taxi Driver’s Vocational License(TDVL), so drivers with TDVL need not apply for PDVL.

The process of getting your PDVL consists of an 8-hour long training course and two test papers at the end of the training. You are also required to pass a medical examination before being awarded the PDVL.

“NOW THAT I’VE MET ALL THE REQUIREMENTS, WHAT NEXT?”

1. GET A CAR

As we all know, getting your basic work tool is not the easiest thing in Singapore. Grab makes it easier now with GrabRentals for those who need to rent a car. Through this programme, you’ll also get to be part of their GRBeyond Loyalty Program, which offers additional incentives. However, opting for this prohibits you from driving for any other private hire company.

You can also drive your own car, instead of renting one. This is a good choice for those who own a car and do not wish to limit themselves to just one private hire company. It’s also a smarter choice because you won’t be eating into your earnings every day just to pay for the rental.

In order to provide private hire services, you’ll need to convert your vehicle’s registration to a Z10/Z11 classification. Additionally, your car needs to have 4 doors and seats 4 passengers or more.

However, with Singapore’s expensive automotive climate, owning a car is not an accessible solution. But there are alternatives, like Singapore’s Only 1 Year Lease to Own scheme, where you can drive home a brand new car with 0% downpayment.

2. GET A COMMERCIAL INSURANCE

Getting commercial insurance for your car is a must if you want to do private hire services. This is to protect you and your passengers in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

3. REGISTRATION

Ready to set up a Grab Driver account? Make sure you have these documents ready:

  • Valid Class 3/3A driver’s license
  • NRIC
  • Vehicle Logcard (Z10/Z11)
  • Bank information including name, account number and branch code
  • Commercial insurance certificate
  • Taxi and Private Hire Car Driver’s Vocational License (TPDVL) / Private Hire Car Driver’s Vocational License (PDVL)

You can head down to the Grab office at 28 Sin Ming Lane, #01-143 Midview City to set up the account. Account set-up is free-of-charge.

4. GRAB DRIVER APP TRAINING

Once your account is set up, you will need to complete your Grab Driver App training. The app is available on both Android and iOS. Through the training, you will learn how the Grab Driver App works and how you can start your Grab-driving journey.
